A village-level meeting convened at the Jamuna Gaon Panchayat in Doboka, Assam turned violent following a heated altercation between the relatives of an elected panchayat representative and a group of local residents. The clash reportedly stemmed from disputes related to past allegations of corruption and administrative irregularities.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation quickly escalated, with individuals attacking one another using plastic chairs as weapons. Several people sustained injuries of varying severity during the incident.
The meeting was part of a government-mandated initiative, where local administrations had directed newly elected panchayat representatives to hold special gram sabhas to discuss the implementation of various welfare schemes.
However, what was intended to be a constructive community interaction devolved into chaos as old grievances resurfaced, triggering physical violence between the two sides.
Emergency medical teams were rushed to the scene, and the injured were admitted to Doboka Lifecare Hospital for treatment. The situation is currently under control, though no official statement has yet been released by the police regarding potential legal action.
Authorities are expected to conduct an investigation into the incident to determine accountability and prevent recurrence of such disruptions in future administrative meetings.
