Arunachal girl dies by suicide in Guwahati's Handique College

GUWAHATI: A student, identified as Savitri Roy, 21, from Arunachal Pradesh studying at Handique Girls' College here allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room today.

Roy was a student of Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) department and currently studying in the semester V at Handique College.

Fellow hostel mates at New Hostel of the college said they broke open the door of her room after some of them peeped through the window and saw her hanging from the ceiling fan.

Although she was rushed to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital here, doctors pronounced her dead.

The reason for her suicide was yet to be confirmed. Though Roy has left a suicide note, college authorities have said she held no one responsible for her death. Although some said it was out of frustration.

Suicide has taken an alarming proportion in the north eastern region of India according to National Crime Reports Bureau (NCRB) data released last year.

The NCRB data revealed that Sikkim and Tripura ranked highest among the other north eastern states in terms of suicide rates. Sikkim and Tripura hold 33.1 per cent and 18.2 per cent of cases respectively. These two states have surpassed national level suicide rate which was 10.4 per cent in the year of 2019.

Right after Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh recorded 7.4 per cent suicide rate and Assam stood fifth recording 6.9 per cent.

Assam alone reported 242 suicide cases that year due to problems related to marriage. Assam also held the highest number of suicide cases in terms of problems related to illness and other family issues.
