Arunachal govt launches air gun surrender abhiyan; 47 guns surrendered

ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh government launched the ‘Arunachal Airgun Surrender Abhiyan’ in Lumdung village, East Kameng district, with an aim to protect and save wildlife.

 

All people were wearing white T-shirts and white caps to support the programme.

Debeyar Socio-Cultural Welfare Organisation organised the ceremony in support of the Department of Environment and Forest. The launch ceremony was attended by a large crowd of residents, youths, and public leaders.

 

Mama Natung, minister of environment and forests, inaugurated the ceremony. On this occasion, the people of the district surrendered about 47 air guns, and Rajo Gyadi also handed over two wild dogs to the forest department.

 

Natung addressed the crowd, saying that our people need to be more mindful of environmental and wildlife conservation. Since our people go hunting and kill them, we are increasingly losing our variety of wild animals and birds and many of them are endangered.

 

“If killing of wild animals continues in the near future, our children will never have the opportunity to see a live wild animal. So, we started it today from our home village because charity begins at home," he explained. "This abhiyan will spread across the state," he added.

 

He also claimed that all surrendered air guns will be kept in the forest department's museum.

East Kameng deputy commissioner P Abhishek Polumatla announced that those gaonbura, PRI leaders who actively participate in this abhiyan to end hunting and killing will be rewarded.

 

He also advises all government officers in possession of an air gun to surrender.
