Itanagar, March 12, 2019:

In a piece of bad news for rapists, but good news for the citizenry at large, frontier state Arunachal Pradesh has become the latest state to impose capital sentence on rapists to prey on minors below the age of 4 years.

This was announced by Arunachal Pradesh BJP on their official Twitter handle. The Arunachal Pradesh BJP wrote: “Justice delayed is justice denied. So, we will not delay it. And, we will never deny it. Our people will always be our priority.”

It remains to be seen how this move will be implemented or whether it has been announced before the Lok Sabha elections as a pre-election ‘jhumla’. But it cannot be denied that this is indeed a necessary step to discourage the heinous crime of child rape. It is to be mentioned that the latest National Crime Records Bureau data, released in November, showed that 19,765 cases of child rape were registered in 2016.
