ITANAGAR: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Wednesday announced to observe ‘Black Day’ on December 11 across the state in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This decision comes in response to the call of the Northeast Students’ Union (NESO) to observe December 11 as ‘Black Day’ against CAA.

The Students’ Union in a statement said, “The protest against CAA across the North East, including Arunachal, is a grim reminder of the injustice the central government had meted out to the people of this region.”

AAPSU further added that the protest is also a reminder to the BJP regime in the centre “that in a democratic setup, it is not always about the ballot or the number of representatives of the ruling party in the Parliament, but sometimes, about the genuine feelings of the people.”

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the apex students’ body in the Northeast Indian region, shall observe December 11 as a “Black Day” by displaying black flags and black banners at important locations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa recalled that “despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous people of the Northeast against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, the government of India did not pay heed and finally passed the draconian law known as Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019.”

It needs mention here that the NESO comprises the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).
