Itanagar, August 19, 2019:

The National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) will resume construction on the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) at the Dollongmukh area in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The NHPC project has been pending since 2011. A slew of protests held in the fear of dam safety and its impact on the downstream areas had halted the construction work. As per reports, the construction will resume after the monsoon season.

The hydroelectric project is expected to bring development in the Dollongmukh area. The neighbouring areas in Assam and Arunachal will also be aided with electricity.

Executive Director of the project, Arvind Bhat said that the project includes provision for flood moderation during the monsoon season.

The National Hydro Electric Power Corporation has also undertaken protection works along both the banks of the Subansiri River up to a stretch of 30 km downstream, which will support inflood control and checking soil erosion.

The construction work on the project was scheduled to be completed by 2010. It was being executed by a consortium of Indian and foreign companies which commenced in 2005.

However, from the initial stage, the project ran into many obstacles. In the beginning, there were problems of land acquisition and when construction started, landslides as well as recurring floods kept delaying its execution.
