Arunachal gets new ICU, paediatric unit at TRIHMS

Arunachal Pradesh Health Minister, Biyuram Wahge, on June 24, inaugurated the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Paediatric Care Unit at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Science (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun. During the event, Wahge pledged to build on the state's previous healthcare achievements.

 

Biyuram Wahge, who also serves as the BJP President, has been newly appointed as the Health & Family Welfare, WRD Minister. He conducted a thorough inspection of TRIHMS, Arunachal Pradesh's only medical college. Accompanied by Commissioner of Health IAS Pawan Kumar Sain, Secretary of Health Krishna Kumar Singh, Marge Sora, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, and Dr Moji Jini, Director of Health, Wahge examined various facilities and identified areas needing improvement.

 

The inspection covered multiple hospital blocks, outpatient departments (OPD), intensive care and children’s wards, a blood center, and other ongoing construction projects within the TRIHMS campus. Following the tour, Wahge held a round table meeting with TRIHMS doctors, directors, and officers. He was briefed on the status of MD/MS courses and seat availability at the college.

 

Completed facilities at TRIHMS include hospital blocks 1 and 2, a badminton court, research block, women's and residents' hostels, a stadium, and a water treatment plant. Projects nearing completion are the academic block, men's hostel, auditorium, nursing students' hostel, non-faculty building, nursing college academic block, rural health training center in Chiputa, and faculty accommodations. TRIHMS has plans to increase its MBBS seats to 100 by 2024. Currently, the institution occupies 24 acres, with an additional 160 acres allocated for future development in Pachin, Naharlagun.

 

Wahge emphasised the importance of enhancing TRIHMS to meet growing healthcare demands. "The current infrastructure needs considerable enhancements to meet the rising demand," he stated. "We have excellent facilities, modern equipment, and a qualified medical team. I urge residents to utilise TRIHMS's services before considering treatment in Delhi or Guwahati, unless referred."

 

He also addressed the progress made in upgrading district hospitals post-COVID-19 and announced plans for ground surveys to assess the needs of primary and community health centers. Regarding cancer treatment, Wahge revealed efforts to improve detection and treatment facilities. He concluded with a call to action, encouraging the public to avoid alcohol and drugs for better health.
