In a significant development for the Mikir community in Papum Pare district, MLA Tana Hali Tara inaugurated the community's first cremation ground in Kokila, Balijan Circle on 29 February. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Jiken Bomjen, marking a noteworthy event for the deprived community.
As an election gift, the newly inaugurated cremation ground is a crucial facility for the Mikir community, providing a dedicated space for the final rites of their departed. The ceremony, which emphasized inclusivity, saw MLA Tana Hali Tara express the commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the welfare of all communities.
MLA Tana Hali Tara, representing the Doimukh assembly constituency, stressed the BJP's ideology of "Sabka Saath aur Sabka Vikas," asserting that development should reach every section of society. He pledged unwavering dedication to his constituency's progress and dismissed personal aspirations for ministerial positions, focusing instead on serving the people.
Highlighting the historical significance of the Mikir community, MLA Hali Tara affirmed their indigenous status in Arunachal Pradesh. The Mikirs, residing in border towns for generations, are an integral part of the region's history and culture.
MLA Hali Tara acknowledged the Mikir community's long-standing association with the Nyishi and their support in the Doimukh area over the decades. He appealed for understanding and empathy towards the Mikir community's cause, addressing their plea for the restoration of lost Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) and Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) status.
The Mikirs, primarily residing in Chessa, Kokila, Hollongi, Balijan, and Tarasso, were initially recognized as APST under the Scheduled Tribe Amendment Act of 1950. However, their status is now in question, and the community is seeking the reinstatement of their rightful recognition.
The inauguration of the cremation ground and the foundation of the road from the airport to Hollongi are not just infrastructural developments but also symbolize a step towards addressing the historical and cultural needs of the Mikir community in Papum Pare district.
