2.9 lakh Assamese citizens registered for COVID vaccine on Govt's CoWin app: HBS

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that as many as 2.9 lakh people have registered to be inoculated against the COVID-19 virus via the Government's app CoWin that has been launched to coordinate efforts for the most ambitious vaccination project in the entire world. The COVID vaccine drive will commence tomorrow.

Stating that "COVID will remain in the foreseeable future and new mutated variants of the virus will emerge", the Minister stated that the virus can only be defeated via vaccination, which will boost morale in view of the rampant spread of the virus in Europe and North America.

"1.9 lakh COVID warriors will be vaccinated in the first phase as they have already registered under the coWIN portal of the Government; then, 1 lakh frontline workers will be vaccinated," he said.

At one point of time after international travel restrictions are eased, Biswa Sarma said, "COVID is likely to once again emerge."

"The COVID vaccine will give us belief that the COVID-19 fight is heading towards a logical conclusion," he added.

Sarma also announced that over 30 crore people in India will be covered under the upcoming vaccination drive. "Therefore, our drive is going to be the biggest vaccination drive in the entire world," he stated.

Firstly, the COVID warriors will be vaccinated. After that, the frontline staff -- including the police-military will be vaccinated. Thereafter, the persons aged above 50 will be vaccinated. After that, persons with co-morbidities will be vaccinated. It might be someone with co-morbidities below 50 years of age as well.

India’s massive nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive will kick off tomorrow (January 16). Nearly 3 Lakh healthcare workers are anticipated to get vaccinated on Day 1.

The CoWin app offers authorities, vaccine administrators and other general public information about vaccine availability, stock and temperature of the vaccine in the cold chain in real-time. It is a scaled-up version of the eVIN, developed to tackle the challenges of Covid-19 vaccination.
