24 dogs meant for meat market rescued at Assam-Nagaland border; rehabilitation underway

JORHAT: On December 15, 2021, 24 dogs were rescued near Assam-Nagaland Border area by Jorhat Police. Later on, the rescued dogs were transported and kept at Pulibor Police Station in Jorhat, said a release.
Non-profit organization JBF has been constantly trying to arrange for local rehabilitation and immediate treatment for the innocent animals. On December 16, 2021, a JBF team reached Pulibor police station and started immediate first aid treatment of the rescued dogs at the location itself.
Afterwards the team safely transported all the rescued dogs to JIRAW (JBF Integrated Resource Centre for Animal Welfare) located in Sonapur town.
As the JBF veterinary team was all set waiting for them at JIRAW around midnight, they were able to provide the necessary treatment to the dogs and restlessly doing the same since.
The rescued dogs are said to be in a highly traumatized and unhealthy condition.
The Nagaland government had decided to ban commercial import, trading and sale of dog meat in July after a picture of incapacitated canines tied in gunny bags was widely circulated on social media.
Dog meat is considered a delicacy among some communities in the state. In 2016, animal rights activists had sent a legal notice to the government over dog meat trade.
However, the Kohima bench of the Gauhati High Court has put on hold the carpet ban on the sale of dog meat in the state.
