GUWAHATI: A total of 267 candidates are in fray for the first phase of polling for 47 seats of Assam Assembly on March 27, while 377 candidates are in fray so far for the 39 constituencies going to polls in the second phase on April 1.
The prominent candidates from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who will contest in the first phase are Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami, Jorhat, ministers Ranjit Dutta, Behali, Naba Kumar Doley, Jonai, Sanjoy Kishan, Tinsukia.
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ministers Atul Bora, Bokakhat and Keshab Mahanta, Kaliabor will also be in the fray for the first phase of polling.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora, Gohpur, Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia, Nazira, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Bhupen Borah, Bihpuria and former ministers Bharat Narah, Naoboicha, Pranatee Phukan, Naharkatiya and Rakibul Hussain, Samaguri will also contest in the first phase.
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurinjyoti Gogoi is also in the fray for the first phase of polling from Duliajan and Naharkatiya seats.

Jailed peasant leader and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi will also contest in the first phase from Sivasagar. Former Congress Minister Ajanta Neog will also try her luck in the first phase as an BJP candidate from Golaghat.
The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election is scheduled to be held from March 27 to April 6 in three phases to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Legislative Assembly.
