KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi along with 70 organisations took out the Sankalpa Sikha Yatra in order to protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 from Sadiya's Bir Lachit Stadium and various other locations in the state on Sunday.
Speaking during the protest, Akhil Gogoi said that the bill will bring the existence of the entire Assamese community at threat. The bill will bring in at least 1.9 crore Hindu Bangladeshis into Assam and as a result of this, the Assamese will turn into a minority.
He added, "The BJP has destroyed the communal harmony in the state as well as the country. Now the BJP has disbalanced the economy of the country and now it is asking the RBI to give them Rs 3 lakh crore."
He added, "We warn the government not to pass the bill and give settlement to any more of illegal migrants from Bangladesh in Assam. We do not want to take any burden of illegal migrants and none of us want to destroy the communal harmony in the state."
It may also be mentioned that the controversial bill, first introduced in the lower house of the parliament in 2016, amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsee and Christian migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
