AASU announces agitation programme during Modi, Shah visits to Assam

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today announced a series of statewide agitation programme against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah’s visits to the state later this month.

Addressing the media in Dibrugarh this afternoon, AASU president Dipanka Nath said a three-day protest programme will be carried out in all districts of Assam demanding abrogation of the CAA.

“We will continue with our protests against the imposition of the CAA till it is not repealed. As part of it, we will launch a three-day statewide agitation programme from January 22,” Nath said.

Elaborating on the protests programme, he said: “We will take out torch rallies in every district on January 22. The next day, all our students will wear black badges. We will hoist black flags in every district and burn copies of the CAA on January 24.”

“The CAA has put our language, culture and identity under threat. We will never allow the government to implement CAA in Assam in violation of the Assam Accord,” added newly elected AASU general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah.

“The government has also failed to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The High-Level Committee on Assam Accord had submitted its report long ago but the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government has failed to implement the recommendations,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Jerenga Pathar in Sivasagar district on January 23. He is likely to distribute land documents to about 1 lakh indigenous landless people in an election meeting.

“Prime Minister Modi is coming to address a rally at Jerenga Pathar in Sivasagar to make a whole lot of false promises as they do every time. For instance, they promised to seal the Indo-Bangla border ahead of the last elections. It has been five years and they have not taken any step. We will not allow them to dupe our people any more,” Nath said.

Shah is also scheduled to visit Kokrajhar on January 24 to celebrate one year of signing of the Bodoland Territorial Region Accord.
