DIBRUGARH:The Dibrugarh district unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has called a boycott against popular singer Bipin Chawdang for his alleged derogatory statement against AASU’s former general secretary and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi.

Chawdang had allegedly thrown barbs at Gogoi for being floating a political party during a recent BJP meeting at Tingkhong in Dibrugarh district.

"We have decided to boycott singer Bipin Chawdang from all AASU programmes in the Dibrugarh district. Recently, he had passed derogatory remarks against former AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi in a BJP meeting at Tingkong. Being AASU members, we cannot tolerate such an act from a singer. We condemned his remark and boycott him from all AASU programmes in Dibrugarh," an AASU press statement said.

Chawdang was campaigning for Tingkong MLA Bimal Bora praising him for undertaking development activities in his constituency.

"Lurinjyoti Gogoi called me and accused me of betraying the people by supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and later on doing a volte face on the issue," Chawdang said.

"Some of the AASU members wanted me to sing in the Duliajan conference of AASU, but Lurinjyoti Gogoi dissuaded the members not to call me because I have joined the BJP," he added.

Chawdang had played a major role in the CAA protests.
