AASU launches fresh anti-CAA protests two days ahead of first phase of Assam polls

GUWAHATI: With just two days ahead of the first phase of assembly elections in Assam, the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today launched its fresh anti-CAA protests in the state.

Marking the protests, the students’ organisation staged an 11-hour hunger strike on the southern bank of Dighalipukhuri here.

Talking to InsideNE, senior AASU leader Tutumoni Kalita reiterated that the people of Assam will give the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a befitting reply in the elections, for their adamant stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Kalita also criticised BJP national president JP Nadda for his recent statement on the CAA. He also warned that the students’ body will intensify their stir if the controversial Act is not scrapped immediately

On the other hand, the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) will also stage protests on the same issue on March 25 and April 1.

Union home minister Amit Shah, while unveiling the BJP's poll manifesto for West Bengal assembly elections on Sunday, said the CAA will be implemented in West Bengal and refugees staying in the state for 70 years will be granted citizenship if the BJP comes to power in Bengal.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also clearly stated that the CAA is a constitutional Act which will be implemented without any doubt.

The first phase of the Assam Assembly elections would be held on March 27.
