Continuing to spearhead protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act, All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi has led several thousand locals of Tinsukia's Barekuri in their warcry against the controversial legislation.

The protest, organized at the Bargaon Mahila Samiti Playground, was called by the Barekuri Yuba Sangh, a local youth body, and saw active participation from a number of organizations as well as scores of locals from all walks of life. AASU General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, joining the protest, said that the irate Assamese would not keep quiet until the CAA is scrapped for good.

"The agitation against the CAA has spread to every nook and cranny of Assam...places like Barekuri and Kordoiguri have also seen protests. These protests are people-oriented. Despite many conspiracies, the protests have continued", Lurin said.The student leader also said that the protests would continue until the Government scraps the CAA and the people of the soil are able to secure their jati (nationhood), mati (land), and bheti (post).

It may be mentioned here that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019, fastracks Indian citizenship for illegal migrants of three neighboring countries: Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
