Guwahati, December 4, 2019:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has categorically refused to accept the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in any form, after the meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Tuesday evening.

AASU chief advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharya reiterated the organization’s stand against the Bill and stated that it violates the Assam Accord and under no circumstances, it will be accepted.

Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The people of Assam will not accept the communal Bill that gives citizenship to illegal Bangladeshi migrants and violates the Assam Accord. We will not accept the Bill at any cost.”

The Assam Accord was signed after long agitation of six years and 855 people were martyred in the agitation. This sacrifice by our martyrs will go in vain if the Bill gets passed. This will also lead to a serious threat to the identity of the indigenous people, Bhattacharya added.

The AASU chief advisor also categorically warned the government not to manipulate Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. He said that Clause 6 is for the people who moved into the state between 1951 to 1971, not for the illegal migrants post 1971.

Bhattacharya also lambasted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over its vision document that announced to implement the Assam Accord and said this was the only reason people of Assam voted en masse in favour of the BJP. However, the BJP did not take any initiative to implement the Assam Accord rather, it is announcing to bring the Citizenship Bill.

Recalling the history of Assam agitation that was supported by all the stakeholders of Assam, the student leader said that the mass agitation will be continued.
