Guwahati (Assam) 5 August 2018

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded the enactment of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which the Centre wants to pass to grant citizenship to the non-Muslim immigrants of Bangladesh besides Pakistan and Afghanistan.

ABVP national general secretary, Ashish Chauhan, said: “The concern of the minority communities from Bangladesh is being addressed through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. It is of utmost importance to differentiate between illegal immigrants and genuine refugees. These genuine refugees (non-Muslims), who faced religious persecution in Bangladesh and Pakistan, should be granted Indian citizenship according to due procedure”.

He added: “The narrow vote-bank politics by some political parties is condemnable, dangerous and a matter of concern for the unity and integrity of India. We request them to stop supporting illegal immigrants. They must support the Government of Assam and India in peaceful updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and its resultant application”.
