Guwahati, March 13, 2019:

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Information and Publicity Secretary Manoj Saikia on Wednesday said that as members of the AGP party, they have accepted the decision of party leaders to be allied with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing to media, Saikia said, “As members, we have accepted the decision of the party. There might be dissatisfaction among people but we have to accept the party’s decision and carry it forward.”

“We have never supported the Bill and will never do so and we know that the BJP has tabled the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in Lok Sabha session and the Rajya Sabha session. However, it was not amended. The BJP has been looking at the situation only from its own perspective, but for the sake of the people of Assam, the AGP’s stand against the Bill is fixed,” he added.

He also mentioned that there might be a chance that the discussion of the Bill is not raised so it is not possible to comment on such issues based on perception. But there have been murmurs that the AGP-BJP alliance was resumed after the two parties came to an understanding regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Meanwhile, BJP President Amit Shah has proclaimed that the Bill will be implemented once the BJP is voted back into power.
