Guwahati: With perhaps a clear eye on the impending polls, the BJP-led Government of Assam has announced a reservation of 17 seats in medical colleges to three communities of the state– Koch Rajbongshis, Ahoms, and Chutias. Notably, all three communities of the state have been agitating in demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
“The Assam government had promised reservation in educational institutions to the six ethnic communities pending the declaration of tribal status. Accordingly, we have reserved 8 seats for Koch Rajbongshis in medical colleges, 5 for Ahoms and 4 for the Chutias,” education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday in Guwahati.

Sarma further informed that the reserved seats will be spread across the seven medical colleges in the state. The three other agitating communities – Moran, Mottock and Tea Tribes – already have reservations.
The Minister further added that the other reserved categories shall not be affected as the 17 Seats will be reserved under the OBC quota, which was recently raised from 15 to 27 per cent.
With the additional 100 medical seats that have been added post the addition of more colleges, the total number of medical seats in the State has now risen to 1,000, Sarma added.
According to Sarma, another 100 seats will be added when the Lakhimpur Medical College begins its maiden session next year.
