Guwahati, October 28, 2018:

The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia, to conduct an investigation into allegations of atrocity by policemen on a group of differently-abled persons during a protest in Guwahati on October 5.

The AHRC issued the directive based on a complaint by the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam. The DGP has been asked to submit the probe report within 30 days.

As per the complaint, the differently-abled persons were staging a peaceful protest at Dispur Last Gate on that day when suddenly a group of cops which included Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Amitabh Basumatary, Dispur Police Station sub-inspector Nipu Kalita and other policemen assaulted the protestors without any rhyme or reason.

The organisation said the protest was staged with due permission from the Commissioner of Police.
