GUWAHATI: In a bizarre turn of events, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) party in Assam has reportedly not paid the electricity bill for its main headquarter in Guwahati's posh Lamb Road locality.

Amit Baruah, the landlord of the building told media that the AJP has not been able to keep their end of the bargain.

"I had leased them the quarter for a period of 11 months for a sum of Rupees 3 lakh," Baruah informed media, adding that he is yet to receive a sum of Rupees 22,000 for electricity.

"In the first month, they paid Rupees 1,250 as electricity bill and have not paid a single penny since then," he rued.

"Legally as per the Constitution of India, we give quarters for rent for 11 months. After 11 months, we evict them," he said. Baruah further added that he cannot "sponsor" the fledgling party anymore.

Asked about the show of affluence by the party which hired choppers for campaign, the landlord said, "As soon as Lurin was put aboard a helicopter, they lost their touch with the common man and did not manage to get any votes."

The AJP and its ally Raijor Dal both performed dismally in the Assembly elections held earlier this year.

Out of the eighty seats it contested, the AJP finished mostly in the third spot. In some seats, its vote share was well below one percent of the total votes cast. Its president had to settle in the third spot in both the seats he contested. Even the sitting MLAs who had joined the party before the election had to face defeat.

The AJP had put up 82 candidates and RD had fielded its party workers in 38 seats, but most of them lost their security deposit.
