TAMULPUR: Former Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary has said the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) will have to work for all communities of Assam to gain acceptance of all ahead of the Assembly elections due in April.

“AJP is a new party. People have some expectations from the party. But, if the party works only for the Assamese community, it will be difficult for it to be embraced by the other communities of the state,” Daimary said here.

Daimary also said although the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) emerged the single largest party in the Bodoland Territorial Council elections, the BJP, United People’s Party - Liberal and Gana Suraksha Dal have gained a firm footing in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

About the BJP alliance’s election prospects, he said the BJP and its allies will decide seat sharing taking into account the parties’ position in different constituencies. “We will hold discussion with leaders of all alliance partners to decide seat sharing,” Daimary, who joined the BJP recently, said.

He is also in the BJP core committee, election committee and advertisement committee.

Asked about his candidature in the state Assembly elections, he said: “People will definitely want me as a candidate. But, it is the party that will take a call. My role in the election will be to campaign and ensure victory of BJP candidates.”

“The BJP has done a lot for the people of the state over the past five years. It is a party that has for the first time assisted in building and conservation of naamghars (community prayer halls) in the state. Therefore, I am sure the people will give their mandate in favour of our party,” the senior leader said.
