BAKSA: With the elections in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) just around the corner, more sophisticated weaponry has been recovered in the region -- this time in the Baksa district. The recoveries were made on Saturday evening in an area falling under the Borbari Police Station in the district. A police official informed that the authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle along with 41 live ammunition and a magazine.

Last night, Baksa police officials under Sub-Inspector Pranav Jyoti Kalita undertook an operation based on secret information. The officials have said that they are trying to find out which group or organization the AK-47 rifle belongs to.

Talking to media, Kalita has expressed that this is a major breakthrough ahead of the BTC elections which are to be held in the month of December.

This is being seen as a cause of major concern in the insurgency-torn region that has only recently seen an iota of peace, with the factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (BTC) coming on board to sign the 'BTR treaty' on January 27 last.

Although the factions of the NDFB have disbanded and many insurgent leaders have gone on to join political parties ahead of the elections, the discovery of automatic weapons from time-to-time reminds of the "gun culture" in the region which, up until recently, was more or less demanding separate statehood.
