GUWAHATI: Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has booked the government residence of former five-time Asom Gana Parishad MLA Brindaban Goswami’s in Dispur after the win in the Assam assembly election.

According to Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) members, Gogoi after claiming a victory from Congress bastion Sibsagar constituency yesterday, latter had booked the No 53 government residential cottage in Dispur's MLA Colony.

A poster could be seen put in the name of Akhil Gogoi just below Brindaban Goswami’s name plaque outside the government residence.

The residence was allotted to Goswami, former AGP MLA from Tezpur constituency as well as party president, who was denied a ticket from the party this time.

Jailed peasant leader Gogoi had scripted history as the first person from Assam to win an election from behind the bars. Gogoi was sent to jail in December 2019 on charges of sedition, when the anti-CAA protest was gaining momentum in Assam, which later on spread to other parts of the country.

Gogoi registered his victory without even turning up at any rally. It was his party members, mother and students who rallied behind him, which was later on joined by other well known activists, such as Medha Patekar, etc.

The Sibsagar constituency had been voting for Congress and Communist Party of India till now and this time the Bharatiya Janata Party was also hell-bent to claim the constituency by hook and crook.

Gogoi led the BJP candidate Surabhi Rajkonwar by almost 11,000 votes.
