People's Leader Akhil Gogoi in "Serious" Condition in Jail

Guwahati, March 2, 2020:

Assam's foremost peasant leader, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi, has reportedly fallen sick in the Central Jail in Guwahati's Lakhra locality, Inside Northeast sources have confirmed.

According to reports, Akhil is suffering from intense fever and stomach ache, as well as waist pain for 3 consecutive days, reporters have confirmed. He has not been able to get up from bed from 3 days.

Meanwhile, the KMSS have demanded the Government to ensure Gogoi's speedy recovery at a proper medical facility.

Meanwhile, Akhil has alleged that he has been "tortured" by the authorities during his jail stay and has condemned the authorities for their attitude. Furthermore, Gogoi has reiterated again and again the need to renew the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that has sparked nationwide protests for its "non-secular" nature.

It may be recalled that Gogoi was apprehended from Jorhat after the enactment of the Citizenship Act (or CAA) in December last under charges of being linked to "maoist rebels". He was arrested under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), reportedly for "sedition".

He has been sent to judicial custody, and in recent times, has started exhibiting worrying signs. Recently, it was reported that Gogoi's blood pressure levels had spiked up and he was taken to the GMCH for treatment.
