Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi and leaders of Brihattar Axomiya Yuva Manch, Goriya Yuba Chatra Parishad along with leaders of 70 organisations have sat for a hunger strike on the day of ‘Uruka’ against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The hunger strike has been called for 24 hours.
Addressing the media, Gogoi said, “It would have been good to celebrate the Bihu and feast together but unfortunately the Central government has put the Axomiya community in a stake by trying to pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha session on 31st of January. To make people of Assam aware of this fact, we are here to protest against the bill and prepare ourselves.”
“The Bill has to be trashed anyhow. This Bill not only provides immediate citizenship to around 20 lakh Hindu-Bangladeshis but also open the path for 1.7 crore Hindu-Bangladeshis into Assam. So I request all the people of Assam to arrange a program to burn the Citizenship Bill in front of the “Bhela Ghar”.”
It may be mentioned that the entire state is protesting against the Citizenship Bill from the very since its very inception few years back.
