In an alarming development, Andaman and Nicobar islands have been hit by nine medium intensity earthquakes ranging from 4.7 to 5.2 on the richter scale, within two hours on Monday, according to the National Centre for Siesmology.
The first quake measuring 4.9 jolted the region at 5:14 am and it was followed by another jolt a couple of munites later.
According to reports, the last jolt occurred at 6:54 am and measured 5.2.
It may be mentioned that the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is severely prone to earthquakes. It is not unusual for 2-3 earthquakes to hit the region on the same day.
