United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) pro-talks leader Anup Chetia met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to discuss the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Speaking to InsideNE, Anup Chetia said, “I met Conrad Sangma and we discussed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. I have thanked him for taking a bold stand against the Bill despite being in alliance with the BJP. I went there to attend the Fifth Chapter of the North East Peoples’ Forum in Meghalaya. He said that that the government is trying hard to amend the Bill. He will again go to Delhi on 10th to meet the other parties.”
“As we can see the actions of the BJP in regards to Northeast, we have all understood that. Now they are trying to pass the Bill with a callous attitude towards people of the Northeast. And they have planned to table the bill in the Rajya Sabha on February 12,” he added.
On the possibility of the BJP securing majority votes to pass the Bill, Chetia said, “The lead is developing in New Delhi, they met only once but opposition is talking to different parties, so they might not be aware of what is happening.”
