An FIR was filed by the Assam Public Works (APW) on Saturday against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly making communal statements post publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The FIR was filed at Geetanagar Police Station here by APW general secretary Dhrubajyoti Talukdar, stating that Banerjee had on 30th July organised a press meet wherein she made various statements regarding the publication of the draft NRC.
According to Talukdar, her statements were communal as she tried to give a communal colour to the NRC update process in Assam by making it an Assamese-versus-Bengali issue. He apprehended breach of peace and tranquility between the two communities residing in Assam as well as a threat to the life and liberty of Assamese people residing in West Bengal.
Alleging that the statements of Banerjee had created a tense situation in Assam, the APW leader feared that these could even lead to communal riots across the State and other parts of the country.
