SONAPUR: Armed poachers from Meghalaya were on Tuesday apprehended at Medhikuchi in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati city of Assam.

The arrests were made based on specific information provided by the Kolkata headquartered Military Intelligence unit regarding armed poachers at a house in paddy fields at Medhikuchi.

Officials said that a joint operation was launched on the intervening night of 17-19 November by police and forest officials during which the armed poachers were nabbed.

Two persons -- Lienhming Thang (65) and Sona Vaiphei (47) -- both residents of East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya -- were arrested. The armed poachers, it came to light, were roaming about with everything they could possibly need to carry out a successful poaching operation.

2 SBBL guns, 11 live cartridges, 18 fired cartridges, 2 mobile phones, a Mihandra Bolero vehicle, gunpowder and pellets, and monkey meat were recovered from their possession.

The recoveries have all been seized by the police who are continuing to investigate the matter.
