Kokrajhar, June 12, 2019:

The Kokrajhar unit of the Red Horns Division of the Indian Army joined hands with Bardwi Sikhla Sports Club located in Kachugaon in Assam's Kokrajhar district by providing assistance in establishing a football training academy for under-privileged children of the region.

Bardwi Sikhla sports club was established in 1980 and ever since, they've been encouraging local talent, many of whom have risen to represent their district and state.

Under this unique initiative, children of Bodo, Rabha and Adivasi ethnicity have been enrolled in the first batch. Sports is an integral part of the Army and it's local sub-unit at Kachugaon has pledged to donate football equipment for the cause.

The children who have the potential to rise high in the world of football will be participating in the next edition of the Kokrajhar Football Tournament and later, in the prestigious BTAD football league conducted by the Indian armed forces in the area.

This initiative is a fine example of how football can reach across all castes and ethnicity. The Inauguration program included a colorful cultural performance by the children followed by an address by Army and Police officials, as well as by the representatives of the club. It is indeed heartening to see "the beautiful game" binding the armed forces and the civilians and bringing them closer.

The 21st Mountain Division (Red Horn Division) is headquartered at Rangia town in Assam. It includes the 77 Mountain Brigade, and, as of January 2010, 315 Field Regiment (India) of the Regiment of Artillery, based at Udalguri.

It falls under the IV Corps, which had been disbanded within the British Indian Army after the Second World War, but was reestablished in 1961.
