With only a few days left to greet goddess Durga, artisans are burning midnight’s oil to finish off the orders that they have taken for various pandals this festive season in Guwahati. They are working overtime to erect mesmerizing structures.

Dilip Paul of Matri Smriti Silpalay in Maligaon area in the city is busy for all of this. Having worked for close to 20 years and a renowned artisan of Guwahati, Paul jumps from one task to the other in order to cater to the orders.

“We have got 27 orders this time. We have been working round the clock to finish off the orders by October 12,” Paul told InsideNe.

Idols of Durga range from Rs.25,000 to Rs.1 lakh at Paul’s shop. He does a brisk business during this festive season.

On the other hand, artisans are giving finishing touches to the puja pandals. Puja committees in Guwahati have come up with different concepts and themes this year round.

InsideNe visited one such puja pandal, Latashil Sarbajanin Durga Puja Samiti, where we met the chief artisan Niranjan Kalita. Kalita said they have been working 15-18 hours a day for the past 15 days. All the 15 artisans engaged in the construction of this pandal are working hard to ensure that the pandal walks away with the best pandal award.

People are choc-a-bloc on the streets of the commercial hub of Guwahati, Fancy Bazaar, these days. People are seen rushing for last minute shopping.
