DIPHU: A former Dima Halam Daogah rebel and a woman were killed while another person was injured in a firing incident in a village in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district late last night.

According to reports, three unidentified people opened fire at a Dimasa celebration, Bishu Dima festival around 11:30 pm.

Police said 42-year-old former DHD leader Amit Nunisa and Alota Maibongsa, 60, died on the spot when the armed men fired several rounds on him at Kharnaidisha village.

Ashit Phonglosa, 25, sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Nunisa had surrendered to authorities along with several other DHD militants in 2003 after the outfit signed a memorandum of settlement (MoS) with the government.

According to police, Dimasa National Liberation Army was suspected to be involved in the killing. Sources here said the DNLA had been suspecting Nunisa to be an informer to the security forces.

Although Nunisa was entitled to police security cover, he opted to go without taking personal security officers with him, the sources added.

A huge contingent of security forces, led by Karbi Anglong district superintendent of police Debojit Deori, rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation.
