Assam: 2 Nabbed for Smuggling Wild Geckos in Nagaon

Assam Police on Wednesday nabbed two smugglers along with two wild geckos, an endangered species, in middle Assam's Nagaon district.

According to reports, the two wild geckos (called kekua snakes in the local tongue) were to be transferred out to be traded in the international market from Balijura in Sapanala.

The two alleged smugglers have self-identified as Jiyabur Rahman and Sarifullah Sheikh.

The Additional SP of the Nagaon Police Station informed mediapersons that last week, the police had received input that two wild geckos would be smuggled. Hatching a plan, the police personnel met the smugglers as potential buyers, and set up a "deal" to catch the smugglers red-handed. The officials have also informed that both the smugglers hail from Nagaon district.

It has been further informed to the media that the two endangered specimens could have fetched upto Rs 30 lakh in the international market.
