Tinsukia, January 10, 2019:

Binod Hazarika, the MLA representing Chabua Constituency that falls under the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, has once again come under fire after All Assam Students' Union (AASU) members on Friday confronted him with black flags, after which as many as 25 of the student union's members were arrested.

According to reports, around 25 members of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) turned up with the symbolic black flags while the MLA was at the residence of Dharmajyoti Barpatragohain, the Pachayat President of Borguri village that falls under Tinsukia district of Assam. Recently, Barpatragohain had announced his resignation from the BJP party right in front of his residence.

The General Secretary of the AASU's Tinsukia unit, Samarjyoti Gohain, who reportedly led the protesters in the black flag protest against the BJP MLA, was arrested by local authorities. Including Gohain, at least 25 AASU members were arrested from the site of the protest.

It may be mentioned that the same MLA, Hazarika, became the target of anti-CAA protesters after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, and his house was burned down by a mob of miscreants.

Hazarika was again drawn into controversy after Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia, visiting Hazarika at his residence urged party-members to fight fire with fire. Saikia's statement saying that the BJP workers should burn down protesters' houses in retaliation was seen as a call-to-arms by the media and intellectual fraternity.
