Assam: 3 Mediapersons Allegedly Extort Money from Truck Drivers, Arrested

Namrup, April 29, 2020:

3 mediapersons from Assam have been arrested, allegedly for extorting money from truck drivers in Dibrugarh.

According to official sources, the three media personnel from Namrup -- Bitu Boruah, Hiren Gogoi and Samiron Boruah -- were found stopping vehicles to check documents citing authorisation by the District Commissioner of Dibrugarh district.

Prior to their arrest, there had been numerous allegations that the trio frequently stop commercial vehicles and demand money from the truck drivers. Recently, they were filmed while extorting money and the video has now reached police personnel.

On April 28, based on an email received at the office of the DC, Pallav Gopal Jha, an FIR was registered at the Namrup Police Station under case no 63/20 u/s 120B/342/353/387/419/468/34 of the Indian Penal Code. Now, legal action is being initiated against the trio.

Another case has been taken up against the trio for revealing the identity of a minor girl in a news report, and legal action is being initiated.
