23 July 2018:

The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Monday staged protests in various parts of Lower Assam against alleged harassment and torture by the Border Police, mandated to detect illegal immigrants.

“We staged protests as people are often harassed and tortured by the Border Police who will send reports to the foreigners’ tribunals against people suspecting them to be illegal immigrants but without conducting any enquiries,” AAMSU chief Azizur Rahman told InsideNe.

The protestors burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and chanted slogans against him and the Central government.

The “complete draft” of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is due for publication on July 30. The NRC is being updated in Assam to detect illegal immigrants.
