Mangaldoi, January 4, 2019:

Continuing its attacks on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) members on Saturday blockaded the road that the saffron party's followers in Udalguri district were taking to participate in a rally in Guwahati's Khanapara.

The Tangla Unit of the AASU, as a mark of protest against the contentious amendment of the Citizenship Act, obstructed the flow of supporters headed to Guwahati to attend the rally. Early in the morning, hundreds of AASU workers poured out onto the streets, and formed a human wall along the Mangaldoi-Bhutiyasang road. Seeing the wall of sloganeering AASU members, many buses carrying BJP supporters were forced to turn back.

A local AASU leader said, "At a time when protests against the jati-destroying Bill-turned-Act in demand of its scrapping are on in full flow, the BJP is trampling on the voice of the Assamese people, by holding a big rally in Guwahati's Khanapara to rub ghee on the fire. We strongly condemn this."

The BJP government enacted amendments to Citizenship law to grant citizenship to religious minorities of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who had to face 'religious persecution'.

The amendment of the Act sparked widespread protests across the length and breadth of the country.

After the violence during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the police firing that left many dead and hundreds wounded, the BJP Government has undertaken an initiative to create awareness about the the legislation through pro-CAA rallies.
