30 July 2018:

Terming it a historic occasion, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has welcomed the publication of the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Monday morning.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya expressed satisfaction that the NRC has been published after a prolonged process.

Terming it as a major “national document and a shield” for indigenous people, he said it will help protect the identity of Assamese people by identifying the Bangladeshis.

He also announced that those “indigenous people” who have been left out of the complete NRC draft would be helped by AASU to register their names subsequently.

Bhattacharyya, however, clarified those who had entered the State illegally post 1971, irrespective of him or her being a Hindu or Muslim, would not be provided any help in this regard.

The senior AASU leader also thanked Supreme Court for supervising the entire NRC update process.
