Assam’s Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta said the Assam Accord was unalterable for the inhabitants of Assam.
Replying to a question on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the Assembly on Saturday, Mahanta said under no circumstances any clause of the Accord can be amended.
Assam prepared itself to bear the burden of the immigrants, who came from 1951 to 71, on humanitarian grounds, he added.
The Assam Accord was signed between the All Assam Students’ Union and the then Rajiv Gandhi government at the Centre at the end of bloody Assam Agitation of early 1980s.
As per the Accord, the immigrants, irrespective of faith who came to Assam after March 24, 1971, will be detected and deported.
