Guwahati, January 13, 2019:

Situation in front of the Assam Assembly turned chaotic today after MLAs belonging to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a protest in front of the Assembly in demand of the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The protest was held ahead of a special Assembly session that has been called to discuss the CAA as well as the granting of ST status to 6 prominent communities from Assam, who have been agitating in regards to the same.

AIUDF party's MLAs, staging a sit-in protest in front of the Assemble, have demanded the immediate roll back of the contentious Bill-turned-Act.

"Today, one day has been assigned for the discussions, whereas we needed two. This proves that the Assam Government is turning tail, and hence, betraying the people, said MLA Aminul Islam, who represents the Dhing Assembly Constituency.

Later, the MLAs marched intro the Assembly shouting slogans against the CAA, due to which the Assembly was adjourned by 45 minutes.

Moreover, the AIUDF leaders also demanded the resignation of Assam, citing his apparent betrayal of the Assam Accord, that was signed between the Indian Government and the leadership of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), of which Sonowal was once the President.

According to reports, the situation is likely to turn even more chaotic in the Assembly later on, and a lot of heated discussions between the members of the ruling coalition's MLAs and the opposition, are expected.
