Margherita, August 26, 2019:

The Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Tinsukia District Committee, on Monday, staged a 3-hours sit-in protest at the North Margherita Rangamancha against the construction of Big Dams of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The youth body also raised demand for a permanent solution to the flood issues prevailing in Assam.

Surojit Moran and Kanchan Bora, President and General Secretary of AJYCP, Tinsukia District Committee said that North East is an ‘earthquake-prone area’ where people of this region are living in trauma, and questioned why the Central Government is interested in making Big Dams at Subansiri in Assam and Dibang Valley Power project in Arunachal Pradesh.

Kanchan Bora said, “As Assam and North Eastern States are ‘earthquake-prone area’, Central government should immediately stop the construction work of NHPC at Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. People of Assam are suffering from flood for many centuries, but none of the Governments have been able to solve these issues."

“We demand the Central government to look into our issues, otherwise in the coming days, strong agitation will be carried out all over Assam by AJYCP,” said Kanchan Bora.

A memorandum was also submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Margherita SDO(Civil) demanding the same.
