ASSAM: AKHIL GOGOI’S STOUT TAKE AGAINST CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT BILL

Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi spoke at length against granting of citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis at a press meet today. The KMSS leader stated that they are totally against the citizenship bill as it would allow illegal immigrants from minority communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for Indian Citizenship. In other words, it amends the Citizenship Act of 1955. He stated that the Hindu Bangladeshis who came before 1971 are an integral part of Assam. He stated that if the bill gets passed, it will include 20 lakh Hindu Bangladeshis. This will pose a serious threat to the basic fabric of the Assamese society

He further added that it is a conspiracy to conduct the hearing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill amidst the festival of Bihu. He said that such a step will quiver the regional sentiment of the people of Assam.

He announced to sit on hunger strike in all the districts of Assam on April 25. He also announced to organise mass convention in the district headquarters of the state. The peasant leader declared of a mass gathering in Guwahati on May 5.
