GUWAHATI: Assam ranked among the worst performing states in the third edition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index and Dashboard 2020-21 released by NITI Aayog on Thursday.
Scoring 57 out of 100, Assam found its place in the bottom three, followed by Jharkhand and Bihar.
Kerala managed to retain the top spot this year.

Among the other northeastern states, Sikkim scored best with 71 points. Along with the Himalayan state, Mizoram and Tripura were placed in the category of ‘Fore Runners’ (65-99) with 68 and 65 points respectively.
Mizoram is among the top gainers with an increase of 12 points.
The rest of the Northeastern states including Manipur (64), Nagaland (61), Arunachal Pradesh (60), Meghalaya (60), all scored below 65.
The SDG India Index is calculated every year to evaluate the progress of the states and union territories on the basis of economic, social and environmental criteria.
“Our effort of monitoring SDGs through the SDG India Index & Dashboard continues to be widely noticed and applauded around the world. It remains a rare data-driven initiative to rank our States and Union Territories by computing a composite index on the SDGs. We are confident that it will remain a matter of aspiration and emulation and help propel monitoring efforts at the international level," Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog said during the launch of the report.
