Assam: Blow to Assam's development? Villagers cremate dead body braving floodwaters

In a village in Morigaon, Assam, no official was to be seen when the villagers criticised their work. The floodwaters up to the level of the chest were seen and people had to brave the floods that to cremate their fellow villager. Since the last 3 years, the culvert has not been constructed which has affected the daily life of the people.

In Jaluguti Rondoloi, Morigaon district, Assam, Lakhyadhar Bordoloi, 55 years was deceased. For the purpose of his cremation, he had to be carried under chest height waters which his family members and the villagers had to face.

A total of 76 people have died in the ravaging deluge of the flood that has continued wreaking havoc across Assam. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 3,218 villages across 27 districts in the state are reeling under floodwater.

A total of 39,79,563 people and 1,31,368 hectares cropland have been adversely affected so far in the flood. So far, 13,30,965 big animals, 7,59,717 small animals and 12,85,754 poultry affected.

Several rivers including the mighty Brahmaputra in different parts of Assam are flowing above danger level, causing floods and consequently leaving thousands of families homeless.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri. Jia Dharali at NT Road Crossing and Kopili at Nagaon and Dhansiri at Numaligarh.

As per the latest data, the flood-affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Chirang,  Udalguri, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi-Anglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Charaideo.

Meanwhile, 748 relief camps have been installed. In the relief camps, there are so far 49,313 people.
