Asom Sangrami Mancha (ASM) has urged President Ram Nath Kovind to release peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and all the detainees of Assam, who were arrested during the anti-CAA movement in December, 2019.
In an email sent to the President's Office, Asom Sangrami Mancha leader Diganta Konwar stated that the anti-CAA movement leaders should be "discharged from all the cases framed against them and kindly do the needful to release them from custody immediately."
Stressing on the deteriorating health conditions of Akhil Gogoi, Konwar stated, "We, the people of Assam, are very much concerned about the Well being and Liberty of Mr. Akhil Gogoi and the other detainees of the anti CAA movement in Assam. Mr. Gogoi is suffering from multiple diseases and his health condition has been deteriorated in jail."
He added that the people of Assam have an apprehension that the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (amended) would be misused against these detainees as part of political vendetta. "We fear, the policy of suppression and retaliation against these patriotic mass leaders will have serious socio-political repercussion in Assam in future," he stated.
Highlighting the December 2019 CAA protests in Assam, Konwar stated, "During these democratic protests, the KMSS leader, Mr. Akhil Gogoi and many other youth of Assam were being detained and slapped with various cases and they are at present under judicial custody...these leaders are son of soil of Assam and very much passionate about Assam and its indigenous people."
