Assam’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has earmarked funds for 18 flagship schemes during the Assam Budget announcement of 2019. One of the focus groups of the budget are the students of the state and the introduction of the ‘Gyan Deepika’ scheme seeks to benefit them through several provisions.
The Finance Minister has announced the following provisions under the scheme:
Admission fee waiver for students up to the degree level; the provision of free uniform for students up until class 10; provision of e-bike for girls who secure first division in Higher Secondary and a subsidy of Rs. 50,000 on all educational loans.
“When I had announced that we would provide scooters to girls, people had started questioning where they would get money to pay for fuel. Thus, we have decided to solve that problem by providing the girls with electronic bikes”, the Finance Minister said.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this scheme is the provision of e-bikes to girls as a means of conveyance to-and-fro their place of study. The eco-friendly bikes shall create more awareness regarding population control.
He also assured that 20,000 students who had taken loans in pursuit of higher education would be provided with a remuneration of Rs. 50,000. He further added that any student who applies for loans in the future shall also be eligible for the same.
