Guwahati, December 13, 2019:

With over 50,000 people gathering in the Assam Engineering field in Guwahati’s Chandmari area, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) managed to bring the people together to oppose the Citizenship Bill that was cleared by the Rajya Sabha.

The crowd chanted slogans like ‘Joi Aai Axom’ (Hail Mother Assam) and ‘We oppose CAB’ to express their disapproval of the ‘forced’ CAB on Assam. The AASU had called for an 11-hour hunger strike to oppose the Bill and people, young and elderly, joined in what seemed like the Assam Agitation 2019.

From the oldest woman in the city to kids studying in Classes 4-5 were seen in the gathering conducted by the AASU in Guwahati today. “We will not accept foreigners brought in by the government. This is our land. We will not adjust now,” said an old grandmother who was seen in the front row of the gathering.

Assam Actress Barsha Rani Bishaya said that the country’s economy has gone down, yet the Prime Minister and Home Minister were busy getting the CAB passed. She warned to refrain from imposing the Citizenship Act of bringing in the undocumented non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Assam Actors Ravi Sharma and Jatin who had recently resigned from the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were also seen in full support of the ongoing Assam protests against the CAB.

The gathering at Chandmari was the one with eminent writers, journalists, artists, activists, students and many more. It may be mentioned here that widespread protests have been going on in Assam over the Citizenship Bill and the agitation turned massive post the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passage. The people of Assam have been opposing the Bill as it poses a threat to the indigenous people and their rights.
