Guwahati, December 13, 2019:

Over 50,000 people gathered in Guwahati’s Chandmari field to join in the 11-hour hunger strike of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Artistes, students, elderly people, all were seen joining in the gathering on Friday to protest against the CAB that cleared the Rajya Sabha tests and became a law. People gathered in the Chandmari field to extend their support to save Assam from the influx of undocumented non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The AASU members sat on a hunger strike in Guwahati’s Assam Engineering College playground in the Chandmari area.

It may be mentioned here that the central government has decided to provide citizenship to Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, except Muslims in the name of religious persecution. The people of Assam, on the other hand, had been reiterating their concerns regarding the threat the influx would pose post the passing of the Bill.

The government has imposed curfew in Guwahati following massive protests post Rajya Sabha’s clearance of the Bill. The internet has also been suspended. People of Assam, young and elderly, have taken to the streets with “We will not accept CAB” slogans.

AASU has called for the 11-hour hunger strike to stand with the people, who have taken the pledge of not surrendering the motherland.

The strike has been supported by the Artists’ Society of Assam, students, intellectuals, poets, writers and all the stakeholders of the society.

AASU chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya has urged the people of Assam to remain calm during the protest and fight for the motherland.
